I have never taken a selfie. Once when my phone was new and I was playing with the camera settings I accidentally pushed the button that reverses the camera… meaning it was focused on ME instead of what I was pointing it at. It nearly scared me to death and I was hoping something was wrong with my phone camera and I really didn’t look that bad! (Nothing was wrong with my phone!)
When we went wine tasting last weekend Fred had a selfie stick. I had heard of these but never seen one. He said he realized that he was always the one taking the pictures and never in any of them so this was his answer. It looked ridiculous but I admit it did the trick. Fred is now front and center in all of his group photos.
This is what I found when I searched selfie on the computer:
The earliest usage of the word selfie has been traced to 2002, when it first appeared in an Australian internet forum on September 13 in a comment written by Nathan Hope: “Um, drunk at a mates 21st, I tripped over and landed lip first (with front teeth coming a very close second) on a set of steps. I had a hole about 1 cm long right through my bottom lip. And sorry about the focus, it was a selfie.”
I decided to brave it and attempt a selfie. This is me editing a picture on my computer and watching Property Brothers on TV. I think this just may be my first… and last selfie!
Note for any Scrabble fans: In August 2014, selfie was officially accepted for use in the word game Scrabble.
